October 1965. Pamplona’s parade of giants, a typical image of the San Fermín festival, is invited to march down New York’s Fifth Avenue. However, not all of them can participate: due to racial discrimination, the American authorities ban the two Black giants from joining. Based on this real event, ‘Black is Beltza’ tells the story of Manex, the young man in charge of carrying one of the giants. Thrust into a long and unexpected journey, Manex becomes a witness to key historical events: the racial riots following the assassination of Malcolm X, the eccentric characters of The Factory, the alliance between Cuban secret services and the Black Panthers, and the proto-hippie psychedelia of the early music festivals.
